GETTING TO KNOW VENICE
Venice is divided into six districts - districts - San Marco is the central one, surrounded on three sides by the Grand Canal. Across the Rialto Bridge is the artisans' quarter of San Polo, and across the Grand Canal to the south is elegant Dorsoduro, with its prestigious art museums and bustling squares. At the outer edges there are Santa Croce, Castello and Cannaregio, home of the Ghetto. In addition to the six districts of the city, you will want to board a vaporetto for its islands: Lido, Murano, Burano and Torcello. A fourth island, San Giorgio Maggiore, is worth visiting for the beautiful views of San Marco and Venice from its church tower.
PIAZZA SAN MARCO AND ITS CHURCH
Piazza San Marco is known as the living room of Venice, the place where everyone gathers, strolls, drinks coffee and meets with friends. Three sides are framed by arches, under which they are located trendy shops and even more trendy cafes. The open end houses the Basilica of San Marco, while the bell tower dominates further on. The Basilica of San Marco is certainly one of the most famous and most photographed churches in the world. Originally it was the Doge's private chapel, decorated with Byzantine art treasures acquired after the fall of Constantinople.
THE BRIDGE OF SIGHS
Perhaps the most famous architectural jewel in Venice, the Bridge dei Sospiri is located in the city center near Piazza San Marco. Its name derives from the fact that those who were detained were led from the interrogation rooms to the prison by passing by ferry under that bridge, once the sentence was received.

The Church holds the remains of Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of sailors. The main attraction are the 17th century walnut choir stalls, it features 27 scenes from the life of the saint.
THE GRAND CANAL
Crossing the heart of Venice in a giant inverted S, the Grand Canal is the main boulevard through the city, connecting Piazza San Marco, the Rialto Bridge and the train station. Only four bridges span its 3.8 kilometers in length.
LIDO BEACH
Lido is a small island in the Venice lagoon that offers sandy beaches and spectacular views over Venice. It is undoubtedly best known for hosting the Venice Film Festival, but it is also the trendiest area of the Venice lagoon, known for its Art Deco architecture, sports resorts and the Oasi degli Alberoni, the protected nature reserve immortalized for its beauty in the poetry of Byron and Goethe.
